BMI takes into account both height and weight but not body composition. Body mass index (BMI) is a common tool for deciding whether a person has an appropriate body weight. It measures a person’s weight in relation to their height. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH):

Weight is often used to indicate the general health and well being of a person. In order to help with this, there is also something called the Body Mass Index (BMI). This index a measure of relative weight measured according to the person’s weight and height.
