Some military forces issued knives for individual campaigns or for specialist troops such as pioneer or field engineer detachments, but these cutting tools were not primarily designed for use as combat knives.

The majority of military forces today have largely standardized the types of combat knife issued to soldiers.

Types of Combat Knives. Fixed Blade: Fixed blade knives are more of a category of knife than a specific type/design. A fixed blade knife simply is a knife without a folding blade. Bowies, Ka-Bars, Mausers, most Karambits, and combat daggers are all fixed-blade knives.
